Should You Worry About Clorox’s Dividend? What Smart Women Investors Need to Know

Okay besties, let’s talk about Clorox’s earnings glow-up — because it’s not quite the glow-up it appears to be. ✨

So Clorox (CLX) dropped its first-quarter fiscal 2027 results after market close Monday, and at first glance? The growth numbers looked genuinely jaw-dropping. But honey, when I pulled up a chair and read the fine print, things got a lot less sparkly. And if you’re an income investor eyeing this high-yield dividend payer — which I know many of you are — you need to understand what’s really going on before you hit that buy button.

Looking good on paper, but…

Net sales leaped 33% year over year to nearly $1.91 billion. Sounds incredible, right? Here’s the thing — most of that was pure optics. Clorox closed its acquisition of Gojo Industries, the maker of Purell, in April (the deal was announced back in January). Since Gojo only started showing up in Clorox’s results in Q4 of fiscal 2026, it massively skewed the year-over-year comparison.

There’s a second wrinkle: Clorox implemented a big enterprise resource planning (ERP) software upgrade in the first quarter of fiscal 2026, which slashed sales that quarter. That created a super low baseline, so this year’s numbers look amazing just by comparison.

This is why I tell my coaching clients to always ask “compared to what?” A 33% growth rate means nothing if the starting line was moved. Those two factors alone accounted for almost the entire 33%.

Earnings told the same story. Attributable adjusted (non-GAAP) net income came in at $190 million, or $1.55 per share — a big jump from $0.85 a year ago. But again, the ERP lapping and Gojo absorption did most of the heavy lifting.

Analysts expected net sales of $1.88 billion and adjusted EPS of $1.07, so Clorox technically beat both. But investors who’d done their homework weren’t impressed — shares drifted slightly lower in after-hours trading. When a stock doesn’t move on a “beat,” that’s the market telling you the beat wasn’t real quality.

The lapping effect, segment by segment

Peek inside the four reporting segments and you’ll see the mirage clearly.

Health and wellness surged 62% to $918 million — that’s where Gojo now lives, and Gojo alone contributed 39 percentage points of that growth. The rest? The ERP lapping. Basically none of it was organic.

Household sales rose 17% to $423 million — Gojo had zero impact there — and the company said it was primarily driven by lapping. Same story for the lifestyle division, up 16% to $283 million. That’s a theme, not a coincidence.

The international segment is the most honest number in the whole report: neither lapping nor Gojo (which is basically a North American product) had much effect, and sales still rose 11% to $281 million. If anything deserves a little applause, it’s that line.

On guidance, Clorox reiterated most of its fiscal 2027 outlook. Net sales growth is still expected at 13% to 14% — but once more, much of that is Gojo and lapping, not real momentum. Adjusted EPS guidance stays at $5.70 to $6 per share, though management now expects to land closer to the bottom of that range. Gross margin expectations also slipped from 42% to 41.5%. Translation: the underlying business is tighter than the headlines suggest.

The deal with the dividend

Now, the part my income-investing girls really care about: that dividend.

Long-term debt jumped 60% year over year to almost $4 billion. Why? The Gojo deal — an all-cash $2.25 billion acquisition (roughly $1.92 billion after factoring in anticipated tax benefits) funded with new debt. Interest expense doubled from $23 million to $52 million. That’s real money leaving the door every quarter.

My honest read: Gojo feels like Clorox trying to buy its way out of a slump. The company’s been squeezed by higher commodity costs and increased transportation expenses stemming largely from the Middle East conflict, while consumers are stretched thin by rising prices everywhere. All of that has hammered the stock — which, silver lining, pushed the dividend yield up to a juicy 5.6%.

And here’s where it gets interesting. Clorox has raised that payout for 49 consecutive years. One more raise puts it in Dividend King territory — 50 straight years of increases, one of the rarest achievements in investing. If Clorox fumbled that milestone, it would be devastating for investor morale. I don’t think it will happen, and not just because the stakes are sky-high. Operating cash flow zoomed 54% higher in the quarter — yes, mostly lapping again, but it proves Clorox can still generate plenty of cash to fund continued raises.

That said, keep your eyes on the payout ratio, because it remains high. That’s likely why recent hikes have been small and incremental — easy on the cash balance. This is exactly what I tell my coaching clients: a high yield means nothing if the payout isn’t sustainable. Yield is the dessert; the balance sheet is the meal.

My prediction? Clorox earns its Dividend King crown when raise time comes in 2027. The company has real challenges — margin pressure, rising debt, sluggish organic growth — but if I were a dividend investor, I wouldn’t be losing sleep over it. I’d just be watching those cash flows and that payout ratio like a hawk before adding shares.

The lesson for your own portfolio? Never buy a headline growth number. Dig into what’s driving it, because a great story on the surface can hide a much quieter story underneath.
