Okay besties, we need to talk about memory chips — because this one piece of news just made a lot of investors very happy. 💅
Last week, SK Hynix (SKHY), the South Korean memory chip giant, dropped its third-quarter earnings on Oct. 28 — and honestly? They were stunning. Record-setting quarter, stock up over 12%. But here’s the plot twist nobody’s talking about enough: this news might be just as juicy for Micron Technology (MU) shareholders, which jumped nearly 5% the same day.
Let me break down why, because this is exactly the kind of story I walk my coaching clients through when they’re learning to read between the headlines.
So what actually happened?
SK Hynix announced that its production of DRAM (that’s dynamic random-access memory) and HBM (high-bandwidth memory — more on that in a sec) is essentially sold out through 2029. And the memory shortage? Expected to last through 2030. Long-term supply agreements plus contracts still being negotiated account for everything they can make over the next three years.
Their CFO, Woo-hyun Kim, put it plainly on the earnings call: they expect it to be difficult to fully meet customers’ volume requirements near term, and supply can’t keep up with demand — a constraint projected to continue through 2030.
Imagine you own a bakery and you’re completely sold out of bread through 2029. That’s not a problem — that’s leverage. 🍞💰
Why Micron fans should be paying attention
Here’s what I’d point out: Micron competes in the same global memory market as SK Hynix and Samsung. So when the industry leader says the shortage won’t ease up until 2030, that’s a rising tide situation for everyone in the pool.
Micron’s own chief business officer, Sumit Sadana, had already been warning investors about this. Back in August at KeyBanc’s Technology Leadership Forum, he said calendar 2027 would be “even tighter” than 2026, and that Micron had no clear indication of when supply would catch up with demand. Now SK Hynix is confirming the same thing. When two major players in an industry tell you the same story independently? I tell my clients to listen.
Tight supply plus strong demand equals pricing power. And pricing power is where the magic happens.
The HBM effect — my favorite part of this whole story ✨
Okay, nerding out for a moment, but stay with me because this is genuinely clever.
HBM is a special kind of DRAM built by stacking memory chips vertically to deliver the massive bandwidth AI accelerators need. Micron makes both HBM and regular DRAM — and here’s the twist: HBM eats up way more manufacturing capacity than regular DRAM does.
Sadana broke it down with actual numbers: making 100 bits of HBM3E uses roughly the same production capacity as making 300 bits of standard DRAM. And with newer HBM4E? That ratio climbs to nearly 4-to-1.
So as Micron, SK Hynix, and Samsung all pour resources into high-margin HBM for AI, they’re shrinking the capacity available for conventional DRAM — the stuff your laptop, smartphone, and data center servers can’t function without. Think of it like three popular restaurants all switching half their kitchen space to make one trendy dish. The rest of the menu becomes scarcer — and scarcer plus still-in-demand means higher prices.
Here’s the kicker: even if Micron never leads the HBM race, it still benefits from the industry shifting that direction. Less conventional DRAM supply, steady demand, higher selling prices. And because chip manufacturing has big fixed costs, higher prices flow disproportionately into profit margins. That’s the leverage effect — and why I always say margin expansion is where stock returns get spicy. 🔥
The numbers don’t lie
SK Hynix’s quarter showed just how much money is in this demand wave: revenue of 104.62 trillion won (about $77.99 billion), up 328% year over year. Operating profit of 83.33 trillion won ($62.12 billion), up 632%. Net profit of 39.78 trillion won ($29.65 billion). The stock popped 10% Wednesday morning, and Micron rose nearly 5% in sympathy. Micron closed at $967.34 on the day.
This is why I tell my coaching clients to watch what happens to a company’s competitors when big earnings drop — the whole sector often moves together.
Now, the real-talk portion of the program 💛
I’m not going to sugarcoat this: memory chips have always been a cyclical business. Strong demand drives prices up, manufacturers expand, and eventually all that new supply sends prices and profits tumbling. It’s happened before and it can happen again. That risk has not gone anywhere.
Micron is building new capacity, including facilities in Idaho, and its competitors are expanding too. If demand cools or new supply arrives faster than expected, today’s pricing environment could soften. Chips aren’t a “set it and forget it” Cinderella story — they’re more like a rollercoaster with really great views.
That said, SK Hynix’s announcement gives another solid reason to believe Micron’s earnings growth could extend beyond this year — and with the stock up more than 200% in 2026, that’s a very good sign for current shareholders.
Here’s my take as your money bestie: if you’re eyeing this space, size your position like an adult, not like you’re betting on a sports game. A hot sector with real tailwinds still deserves a seat at a diversified table, not the whole dinner. Diversification is your financial skincare routine — boring-ish, but it keeps everything healthy long term. 😌
If Micron’s already in your portfolio? This news is validation that your thesis has legs beyond the current year. If you’re on the sidelines? Do your homework, understand the cyclicality, and decide how much volatility you can genuinely stomach before you buy anything.
At the end of the day, the lesson isn’t really about one chip stock — it’s that understanding why a company wins (tight supply, pricing power, margin leverage) makes you a sharper investor than chasing headlines ever will.
