FREMONT, Calif., and HSINCHU, Taiwan, Oct. 26, 2026 /PRNewswire/ — As performance requirements rise across drones, EVs, and energy storage systems, medium and high-nickel NCM batteries are seeing strong momentum in high-performance lithium-ion applications, driven by their high energy density and ability to enable greater range and lighter battery designs. Ongoing advances in cycle life, safety, and commercialization are helping broaden their adoption across demanding applications. The Industrial Technology Research Institute (ITRI) has partnered with eJoule Inc. to advance next-generation mid- and high-nickel NCM battery technologies. The collaboration leverages eJoule’s high-performance single-crystal nickel-manganese-cobalt (NCM) battery cathode materials and integrates capabilities across cathode materials, electrode manufacturing, and cell engineering to accelerate the transition of advanced battery materials from R&D to production. The initiative targets applications including drones, autonomous robots, EVs, and energy storage systems, highlighting the R&D strength and commercial potential of Taiwan’s advanced battery materials ecosystem while supporting a more resilient, high-performance battery supply chain.
Jeffrey Kuo-Chan Chiou, ITRI’s Vice President and General Director of Material and Chemical Research Laboratories, stated that ITRI has long been dedicated to the R&D of battery materials and cell technologies. This collaboration with eJoule Inc. combines the R&D strengths of both organizations in materials and battery technology. eJoule contributes its high-performance single-crystal NCM cathode materials, while ITRI tailors cell specifications and capacity, optimizing rate capability, cycle life, and other electrochemical performance, creating a direct link between material properties and real-life cell performance. Testing to date shows that eJoule’s single-crystal NCM cathode materials offer advantages in cycling stability and capacity retention, maintaining stable performance even after extended charge-discharge cycling, with cycle life approaching that of lithium iron phosphate (LFP) batteries. These results highlight the development potential of single-crystal NCM materials to balance high energy density with long service life while offering improved safety compared with conventional NCM materials, broadening the options for high-performance applications such as drones and EVs.
eJoule Inc. is a California based deep-tech battery materials company with established operations in both the United States and Taiwan. At the core of its technology is the proprietary Dynamic Crystallization® Process (DCP®), which produces single-crystal cathode active materials directly from solution droplets without the conventional precursor (pCAM) stage. The process simplifies manufacturing and eliminates waste associated with precursor processing, while enabling precise control over chemical composition, dopant distribution and particle crystallinity to support improvements in battery performance, stability, and safety. Built on the DCP® platform, eJoule has developed a portfolio of mid- and high-nickel NCM products for high-performance battery applications
“This collaboration brings together eJoule’s cathode material capabilities with ITRI’s expertise in electrode fabrication, cell development, and battery integration,” said Dr. Minduan Liu, Vice President of eJoule Inc. “Together, we can integrate development from powder through electrode to cell, accelerating the path toward commercially viable, high-performance batteries.”
ITRI is committed to deepening its partnership with eJoule Inc. to accelerate the advancement and commercial adoption of mid- and high-nickel cathode materials and battery technologies. By extending the collaboration from material R&D through battery manufacturing and market deployment, the two organizations aim to strengthen Taiwan’s battery supply chain, expand into global markets, and enable a broader range of high-performance and sustainable battery solutions.
