The Vilcek Foundation Announces the 2026 New American Perspectives Program at the Hawaiʻi International Film Festival (HIFF)

Presented in partnership with HIFF, the program spotlights five immigrant filmmakers through screenings and special events, including a master class with Academy Award® winner Ke Huy Quan

HONOLULU, Oct. 21, 2026 /PRNewswire/ — The Vilcek Foundation, in partnership with the Hawaiʻi International Film Festival (HIFF), presents the New American Perspectives (NAP) program at the 46th edition of the festival, running on O’ahu from October 21–November 5, 2026.

NAP spotlights immigrant filmmakers, celebrating the powerful impact of diversity in contemporary cinema in the United States through public film screenings, Q&A sessions with filmmakers and actors, and a panel discussion. This year’s NAP program will also feature a book talk and master class by Academy Award®-winning actor Ke Huy Quan.

A mainstay festival program for the past two decades, NAP welcomes a cohort of five foreign-born artists this year. The distinguished 2026 group includes featured filmmaker Quan (b. Vietnam) and four guest filmmakers: Henry Ian Cusick (b. Peru), Liz Sargent (b. South Korea), Alex Tarrant (b. New Zealand), and Michelle Zhou (b. China). This program represents the U.S. premiere of new films from Cusick and Tarrant. The program will also mark the debut of feature-length films by Sargent and Zhou.

“From stories of wartime bravery to period pieces set during cinema’s Golden Age, this year’s New American Perspectives program celebrates the humanity at the heart of filmmaking and showcases the importance of diverse voices in the craft,” Vilcek Foundation President Rick Kinsel says. “The Vilcek Foundation is proud to continue our longstanding partnership with the Hawaiʻi International Film Festival and spotlight the ingenuity of storytellers from around the globe.”

The 2026 NAP program is buoyed by two featured events. First, NAP’s quartet of guest filmmakers take the stage for a panel discussion exploring both their creative journeys and how immigrant and Indigenous perspectives can challenge conventional narratives and democratize the film industry.

Second, Academy Award®-winning actor Quan hosts a book talk for his debut work, Never Say Die: A Memoir. Reflecting on his journey from childhood stardom to behind the camera and back again, Quan discusses his life, career, and the lessons from over four decades in film. A HIFF career achievement honoree, Quan will also lead a master class discussion following a screening of his classic film Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom.

NAP guest filmmakers will participate in Q&A sessions following select screenings. Filmmakers Henry Ian Cusick and Alex Tarrant will also participate in HIFF’s Guest Filmmaker Program, which brings artists from around the globe into Hawaiʻi’s K-12 classrooms.

“These five films show the power and depth of American storytelling today — and are informed by the remarkable journeys of the filmmakers themselves,” Jean H. Lee, executive director of the Hawaiʻi International Film Festival, says. “We are grateful to the Vilcek Foundation for bringing us work that will inspire the next generation of filmmakers here in Hawaiʻi to tell their own rich and varied stories as well.”

More information on the NAP program and participating filmmakers can be found below. Tickets to the NAP and HIFF46 can be purchased at hiff.org.

Henry Ian Cusick stars in this meta-horror set in 1930s Hollywood. Carlos Villarías (Cusick) is hired to play Dracula in the Spanish-language production, filming overnight on the same soundstages as the English-language movie featuring Bela Lugosi. Tensions mount as a string of murders on the darkened soundstage begins to blur the line between performance and possession. Los Vampires is in Spanish and English with English subtitles. Rooted in the real-life experiences of writer and director Liz Sargent and star Anna Sargent, Take Me Home follows Anna, a Korean American adoptee caring for her aging parents in a Florida suburb. When a devastating heat wave disrupts their fragile routine, Anna, her sister Emily, and their father Bob must confront an uncertain future. Seeking to appease her seemingly perfect middle-class Chinese family, Lei brings a man home on New Year’s Eve to pretend to be her boyfriend. The unexpected appearance of her real girlfriend shatters this carefully constructed facade, and Lei finds herself caught between familial obligation, cultural expectations, and the desire to live authentically. Big Little Things is in Mandarin and Cantonese with English subtitles. HIFF represents Big Little Things’ U.S. premiere, as well as Michelle Zhou’s first feature-length film. A Q&A with the filmmaker will follow the first screening.

Zhou (b. China) is a Los Angeles-based writer and director whose work explores intimate relationships and shifting power dynamics. Zhou’s short film, Fish Eye, won Best Short Film at the 46th USA Film Festival and her screenplay Under the Snow was a Sundance Screenwriters Lab semi-finalist. Her debut feature, Big Little Things, premiered in the Orizzonti section of the 83rd Venice International Film Festival. It won the WIP (Work-in-Progress) Activator Market Potential Award at the 62nd Taipei Golden Horse Film Festival and was presented at the 2025 Far East Film Festival as part of Udine’s Focus Asia section.
