Stockholm presence opens new gateway for Canadian companies with customers, partners and opportunities across Sweden and the Nordics
STOCKHOLM, Oct. 20, 2026 /CNW/ — Export Development Canada (EDC) today announced it has established a new representation in Stockholm to help Canadian companies build commercial opportunities in Sweden, one of Europe’s most innovative and dynamic economies, and an important entry point to the Nordic region.
As part of its broader trade diversification strategy in Europe, EDC is strengthening its footprint across the continent to help Canadian companies tap into new markets and build commercial relationships. The new Stockholm representation joins EDC’s existing European representations in the United Kingdom, Germany, Türkiye and France.
“Sweden is at the forefront of innovation and industrial transformation, making it a compelling market for Canadian companies with advanced technologies and specialized expertise,” said Alison Nankivell, President and CEO, EDC. “By establishing a presence in Stockholm, EDC can help Canadian exporters contribute to Sweden’s advanced manufacturing, defence and security, energy, advanced manufacturing and digital technologies sectors, and use the market as a springboard to opportunities across the Nordic region.”
Canada and Sweden share strong ties grounded in common values, innovation and expanding trade. Sweden is Canada’s seventh-largest trading partner in the European Union, with Canadian exports to Sweden driven largely by aerospace and manufacturing. A 2025 strategic partnership committed both countries to expanding trade and investment ties, while Sweden’s advanced industrial base offers growing opportunities for Canadian companies.
“As Canada builds a stronger trade relationship with Europe, EDC’s new Stockholm representation will connect Canadian businesses with new customers and partners while advancing our shared economic security and prosperity.,” said The Honourable Maninder Sidhu, Minister of International Trade. “Canadian exports to Sweden have more than doubled since 2021, and in 2025 alone EDC supported more than 230 companies and facilitated $154 million in business. An expanded presence in Sweden will deepen trade and investment between our countries, giving businesses and workers new opportunities to grow in this key market.”
This growing relationship is reflected in EDC’s partnership with Swedish telecommunications leader, Ericsson. Ericsson employs more than 3,100 people in Canada, with major R&D centres in Ottawa, Montreal and Toronto. Announced in 2025, the USD$3 billion partnership supports Canadian-led innovation and global projects in 5G, quantum communications, Cloud RAN and AI-powered network management. The partnership helps Canadian companies scale internationally, connect to Ericsson’s global supply chain and bring advanced technologies to customers, governments and critical infrastructure providers worldwide.
EDC’s Sweden representation will provide Canadian exporters with local market intelligence, connections to Swedish buyers and partners, and support growth opportunities in the market. From Stockholm, EDC will also support Canadian companies pursuing opportunities across the Nordic countries of Denmark, Finland, Iceland and Norway.
Through its Stockholm representation, EDC will bring together its financing and risk solutions with insights from Canada’s Trade Commissioner Service, other government partners, and relationships across Sweden’s business and financial communities. This coordinated approach will help Canadian exporters better understand market needs, reach prospective buyers and partners, and turn opportunities into commercial outcomes.
“Sweden’s fast-moving business environment rewards companies that understand local priorities and can demonstrate how their solutions contribute to innovation, sustainability and industrial competitiveness,” said Bryan Sirois, EDC’s Chief Representative in Sweden. “With a presence in Stockholm, EDC will help Canadian companies establish a foothold in the market and position themselves to participate in major developments across Sweden and the Nordic region.”
