Marchesi Frescobaldi Introduces the New Vintage of Montesodi

Montesodi 2023 Arrives in International Markets, Showcasing the Distinctive Expression of Sangiovese from Castello Nipozzano

NIPOZZANO, Italy, Oct. 13, 2026 /PRNewswire/ — Marchesi Frescobaldi announced the release of the newest vintage of Montesodi Chianti Rufina Riserva DOCG, now available in the United States. Produced exclusively from Sangiovese grown in the Montesodi vineyard at Castello Nipozzano, Montesodi 2023 reflects the distinctive character of the vineyard and the contrasting conditions of the 2023 growing season, resulting in a wine marked by elegance, depth and harmony.

Marchesi Frescobaldi

Located in the hills of Chianti Rufina, Castello Nipozzano is one of Marchesi Frescobaldi’s historic estates, where the mountainous landscape and distinctive climate create ideal conditions for producing wines with structure, freshness and longevity. Within the estate, the Montesodi vineyard sits approximately 400 metres above sea level on schist soils with a southwestern exposure. Its name reflects the stony nature of the land, which, together with the vineyard’s elevation and exposure, contributes to the distinctive character of its Sangiovese.

First produced in 1974, Montesodi was Castello Nipozzano’s first Cru and has remained one of the estate’s defining expressions of Sangiovese. More than five decades later, the wine continues to reflect the character of its vineyard, combining the elegance of Sangiovese with the distinctive conditions of the Chianti Rufina hills.

The 2023 growing season developed under contrasting climatic conditions. A very mild winter was interrupted by several cold periods, allowing the vines to experience a proper vegetative rest. Abundant rainfall early in the year replenished the soil’s water reserves, while continued rain and below-average temperatures through spring provided a strong foundation for the growing season. July brought intense and prolonged heat, testing the vines before temperatures dropped at the end of the month, creating more favorable conditions for continued ripening. The resulting vintage is characterized by depth and complexity while maintaining balance and elegance, authentically expressing the identity of the Nipozzano area.

The Sangiovese grapes were harvested by hand into 15-kilogram crates and carefully selected both in the vineyard and at the winery. Following alcoholic fermentation and maceration, the wine underwent malolactic fermentation before beginning its traditional maturation in 30-hectoliter Austrian and French oak barrels. Montesodi 2023 remained in oak for 18 months until bottling, followed by additional bottle ageing to allow the wine to develop greater elegance and integration.

Montesodi 2023 displays a vibrant ruby-red color. The complex bouquet reveals elegant notes of arbutus berries, redcurrants and goji berries, followed by floral aromas characteristic of Sangiovese and balsamic and savory nuances. With time, roasted notes emerge from the wine’s maturation. Dry and structured on the palate, it offers dense yet silky tannins and a long, persistent finish.
