Drone measurements by Aspen Snowmass show 85% of snow volume remained under the insulated mats through the Colorado summer.
SANTA FE, N.M., Sept. 24, 2026 /PRNewswire/ — Snow Secure’s insulated mats have passed their first Colorado summer in a snow storage pilot project at Aspen.
Snow was covered at Aspen Snowmass in April, with Snow Secure’s continuous temperature monitoring running from April 30 through August 31.
Drone measurements by Aspen management on August 31 showed 85% of the snow volume remaining under the mats. The measurements include both summer melt and the natural compression of the stored snow.
24/7 monitoring at Snowmass shows the conditions the insulation faced. Over the period, the temperature sensor on top of the mats averaged 61.8°F (16,5°C) and peaked at 118°F (47,8°C) in the Colorado summer sun.
Directly beneath the insulation, at the snow surface, the temperature averaged just 33.6°F (0,9°C).
“Resorts cannot control the autumn weather, but snow storage gives them another way to control when they have snow available. Insulation is what makes summer storage possible in demanding conditions.
