MONACO, July 07, 2025 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Exploring the potential of alternative fuels in the maritime sector. During the days of the 12th Monaco Energy Boat Challenge (1-5 July), at the Alternative Fuels Conference on Friday morning, different actors gathered together to discuss technology aspects, challenges, and advancements related to marine energy solutions based on alternative fuels, including hydrogen, methanol, and other innovative sources. Clean hydrogen is still the starting point when it comes to clean energy sources, but now it is time to investigate more to make the next step. As of now, the technology is ready, but it has to be accompanied by infrastructure, investments and supply chain. From an infrastructure point of view, the evolution could be the same as it occurred with oil in the past. “We are looking at the full value chain, a bit like if it was a pipeline. We only provide one piece of the puzzle, but it is a big one. The ecosystem is made of a vessel that will transport, for example, green ammonia from Australia to Korea to Japan in bulk format. Basically, we help owners thanks to our expertise in owning and leasing large floating units,” said Philippe Lavagna, product account manager at SBM Offshore. “We say we need a transition, and it takes time. Miracles don't happen overnight. That's why we are committed to provide clean solutions to the industry,” he added.

MONACO, July 04, 2025 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- A floating laboratory to test and demonstrate the feasibility of renewable energy solutions for maritime transport and beyond. In Monaco, during the days of the Monaco Energy Boat Challenge, the event dedicated to the future of yachting organised by Yacht Club de Monaco, the catamaran Energy Observer is moored at the YCM Marina. It is the first self-sufficient vessel powered by a mix of solar, wind, hydro and hydrogen produced on board and produces zero emissions. While planning a nine-year long new journey, this year the Energy Observer plays an even more central role in the Monaco Energy Boat Challenge (MEBC), serving as a direct link between research, innovation, and the younger generation. A real transmission is happening between the young engineers participating in the event and the professionals of Energy Observer. What students develop and test in the paddocks finds a concrete application aboard this unique vessel. The students also had the opportunity to visit the Energy Observer, discovering its technologies up close. For many, it was a first encounter with such an emblematic ambassador of sustainable maritime innovation. “Seeing the Energy Observer up close, understanding how everything we've been working on during the Challenge connects to real-life technology — it's honestly inspiring. It makes you realise that what we do here isn’t just theoretical, it's shaping the future,” shared Enguerrand from the team Néréides - UTT.

In June 2025 AS Tallink Grupp transported 598,977 passengers, which is a 4.9% increase compared to June 2024. The number of cargo units decreased by 11.2% to 22,544 units and the number of passenger vehicles was up by 1.0% amounting to 87,530 units compared to the same period a year ago.
