UMHS Launches UWorld-Backed Curriculum, Leading the Caribbean in Student-Focused Innovation

Top-rated Caribbean medical school expands USMLE preparation with fully integrated UWorld access and enhanced academic support, reinforcing its commitment to student success

NEW YORK, July 10, 2025 /PRNewswire/ — The University of Medicine and Health Sciences (UMHS), a small, mission-driven medical school with a commitment to student success and a legacy of successful residency placements in the United States and Canada, is proud to announce a new partnership with UWorld, the gold standard in United States Medical Licensing Examination® (USMLE®) preparation.

“We’re giving our students access to the very best tools available to succeed on the USMLE and beyond.”

Beginning May 2025, UWorld has been fully integrated into UMHS’s enhanced Clinical Science Program in Maine. Starting this September, access will expand to include students in EBS 5 and Med 4 in St. Kitts, with plans to embed UWorld resources throughout the Basic Science curriculum.

This initiative makes UMHS the only Caribbean medical school to fully integrate UWorld into its curriculum. Used in lectures, small groups, and guided sessions, these high-yield resources help students master the knowledge and clinical reasoning skills needed to excel on the USMLE, a three-step exam required for medical licensure in the U.S. Higher USMLE scores are closely linked to stronger clinical performance, making early, effective preparation critical to long-term success in medicine.

“Our top priority is preparing students to become skilled, compassionate physicians,” said Warren Ross, President of UMHS. “By integrating UWorld into our curriculum and combining it with personalized learning plans and increased assessments, we’re giving our students access to the very best tools available to succeed on the USMLE and beyond.”

The newly redesigned 15-week Maine Integrated Program now combines UWorld with Kaplan Didactic Lectures, NBME self-assessments, and faculty-led small group reviews. The result is a structured, high-yield Clinical Science Program designed to help students build mastery and confidence ahead of Step 1.

As part of its expanded partnership with UWorld, UMHS is launching a new pilot review course in St. Kitts that will integrate UWorld’s Step 1 resources directly into the EBS 5 and Med 4 curriculum, supported by dedicated faculty mentors. This initiative is designed to accelerate readiness so students can take Step 1 within three months of completing the Maine Review Program. Plans are also underway to bring UWorld into earlier Basic Science semesters, ensuring that all students benefit from the highest-quality USMLE preparation from the start of their medical education.

UMHS continues to raise the bar for Caribbean medical education. The university was recently awarded six years of full re-accreditation by the Accreditation Commission on Colleges of Medicine (ACCM) maintains one of the Caribbean’s lowest attrition rates, and boasts an impressive 96% student retention rate.

USMLE pass rates reflect the impact of UMHS’s student-focused approach, with an 87% overall Step 1 pass rate and a 91% overall Step 2 CK pass rate. Strong test results translate into long-term success. UMHS alumni have earned residencies and fellowships in every U.S. state and at leading institutions such as the Mayo Clinic, Yale, Duke, Johns Hopkins, and Mount Sinai. Recent residency matches include positions within highly competitive specialties such as Anesthesiology, Surgery, Ophthalmology, and Radiology.

“Our integration of UWorld represents more than just a curriculum update,” said President Ross. “It’s part of a larger strategy to elevate academic outcomes, strengthen clinical readiness, and ensure our students achieve their ultimate goal of becoming excellent physicians.”
