First woman to lead UST brings distinguished scholarship, a record of administrative excellence, a passion for student success, and deep Texas roots
HOUSTON, July 8, 2025 /PRNewswire/ — The University of St. Thomas (“UST”) is pleased to announce that Dr. Sinda K. Vanderpool has been named the institution’s 10th president. She succeeds Fr. Dempsey Rosales Acosta, who has served as interim president with steady, heartfelt leadership.
Dr. Vanderpool joins UST after a national and international search led by Bob Corrigan, Chairman of the UST Board of Directors, and extensive engagement with the Basilian Fathers, faculty, alumni, and friends of UST.
Most recently, Dr. Vanderpool was President and Vice Chancellor of St. Mary’s University in Calgary, Alberta, Canada. While there, she increased enrollment, significantly increased revenues from private and public entities, and emphasized student success. She is a collaborative leader who focuses on people.

Dr. Vanderpool earned her doctorate in French Literature from Princeton University and a bachelors in French from Davidson College with high honors, Phi Beta Kappa and magna cum laude.
Dr. Vanderpool began her career in higher education at Baylor University. She rose through the ranks and ultimately became the Associate Vice Provost for Student Success. Her track record of achieving peer-leading student outcomes is particularly relevant today, where policy makers are considering linking student funding to outcomes.

Moving to Houston will be a homecoming for Dr. Vanderpool, who graduated from Lamar High School, just a few miles from UST.
